Newborn Essentials: What Do You Need Before Baby Arrives?

Getting ready for your baby comes down to four things: travel, sleep, feeding and keeping clean. Pick a model for each item, skip anything you already have, then add the whole set to your cart at once.

  1. Step 1 · Before the birth

    Must-haves

Before the birth you will need a car seat (from the ride home from hospital), a bassinet or cot, feeding bottles, a baby bath, nappies and newborn clothes.

  2. Step 2 · The first month

Used as soon as you're home

In the first few weeks you will use a stroller, a baby health kit (thermometer, nasal aspirator, nail clippers) and bath-time products.

  3. Step 3 · 3–6 months and up

    Can wait until later

You can buy these later: a baby carrier, a play mat, newborn toys and a high chair (used from around 6 months).

Nice to have

A baby carrier lets you hold your little one for longer without back pain — handy around the house or on short outings.

We don't stock this yet — easy to get yourself.

Sleep

Bassinet / cot

Essential

Newborns should sleep on their own firm, flat mattress, such as a bedside bassinet or a cot like the Stokke Sleepi that grows with your child.

Swaddles · blankets

Essential

Swaddling helps babies feel warm and settle to sleep more easily. Have 3–4 on hand so you can rotate them through the wash.

Nice to have

A bouncer lets your baby sit and play close to you during the day. It can be used from birth within the maker's weight guidelines.

Feeding

Bottles · teats

Essential

Have 4–6 small bottles with newborn teats ready. Even if you breastfeed, they're useful for feeding expressed milk.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to buy before my baby is born?

+

The essentials fall into four groups: travel (car seat, stroller), sleep (bassinet or cot, swaddles), feeding (bottles, teats, bottle-cleaning gear) and keeping clean (baby bath, nappies, wipes, bath products), plus newborn clothes and a baby health kit.

When should I start preparing for the baby?

+

You can start from around 7 months of pregnancy and aim to have the essentials ready by 36 weeks in case the baby comes early — especially the car seat, which should be installed in the car before the day you go home from hospital.

Do I need a car seat from birth?

+

Yes. A newborn needs to ride in a rear-facing car seat from the very first trip home from hospital. Choose an i-Size car seat that is suitable from birth and install it correctly before your due date.

Which newborn items can I buy later?

+

A baby carrier, play mat, developmental toys and high chair can all wait, as babies start using them from 3–6 months. That said, buying them together as a set can be more convenient and better value.

Can I buy a newborn essentials set at ABC the Baby?

+

Yes. Pick the model you want for each item on this page, skip anything you already have, then add the whole set to your cart. You'll choose colours one item at a time, or you can message our team on LINE to help put the set together and check current promotions.
