The 5R Approach
Hape has consistently applied the 5Rs for many years: Rethink, Redesign, Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. These simple practices have helped us significantly reduce our impact at every stage of production.
Hape has also installed a solar power system at its factory to supply production facilities and office buildings. It generates hundreds of thousands of kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean, natural energy each year.
When it comes to water management, we know that water is a precious resource that must be protected. Our wastewater treatment system therefore handles 10 tons of sewage daily to ensure that no toxic wastewater is released into the natural environment.
To address air pollution, our spray-painting unit has equipment to capture gas emissions, with 2 waste-gas collection towers. Any dust released during wood cutting at the factory is captured in industrial waste collection bags.
One of Hape's highest priorities is preventing unnecessary rubbish and waste. We have therefore switched our toy packaging to recyclable materials. We also use low-VOC soy-based inks, and the substances used in our toy production leave no residues and are not toxic to the natural environment.
Working in Harmony with the Planet
Today, sustainability is an important purchasing consideration for many consumers. Hape seeks sustainable materials for its toys, such as rice-based composites, bamboo (read more: Flexistix Bamboo Construction Toys), wood-flour blends, and FASAL. In 2021, Hape took another step toward sustainability by introducing cork composites and natural rubber. Both cork and natural rubber are renewable materials that can be harvested without cutting down trees. Hape also has its own bamboo research center to develop alternative materials.
Hape continually strives to make its products as environmentally friendly as possible. It assesses the sustainability of materials under consideration and, wherever possible, removes unsustainable materials from its products altogether.
